Gupta Brothers (Shellac) is a leading manufacturer, exporter and supplier
of Shellac and other Lac products from India. The company is a Registered
Partnership Firm and has been associated with different aspects of Shellac
Trade for the last eight decades and it is our family business.
We are members of Shellac Export Promotion Council, Kolkata, sponsored by
Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India.
Lac is the raw material of Shellac. Our modern, semi-automatic plant is located
at Village & P.O. Bundu, District-Ranchi in Jharkhand (India), which
is the finest Lac growing area in the world. These finest quality Lac is processed
and manufactured into finished product known as Shellac and other Lac products
under strict quality control and personal supervision of our Senior Partner,
Mr. Binay Kumar Gupta. The raw material and finished products are thoroughly
checked and tested in our laboratory at our plant and also by other approved
laboratories.
We manufacture both Handmade and Machine made grades of Shellac, Buttonlac,
Seedlac, Natural Lac Dye and other Lac products. Our monthly production capacity
is 100 M/Tons. Our main machine made grades are as follows:
GB-TN SHELLAC
GB-LEMON SHELLAC
GB-ORANGE SHELLAC
Natural Lac Dye produced by us, is non-toxic, eco-friendly and free from
banned AZO group. It is only natural dye amongst all the dyes which can produce
dozens of shades by using different mordants which no other natural dye can
do.
What is Lac & Shellac?
Lac is the resinous secretion of the Lac insect, known as Laccifer Lacca,
a parasite that forms incrusation on the branches of certain trees. On completion
of incrustation, it is separated from the branches either by breaking by hand
or scraping with a knife. Lac in this form is known as Sticklac and brought
to Shellac processing plant for refining and processing.
Seedlac: It is a semi-processed product derived after washing crushed
Sticklac with water. This product is in granule form and is a raw material
for manufacturing different grades of Shellac, Buttonlac and Bleached Lac, Dewaxed shellac & Aleuritic Acid etc. Seedlac in granule form is also exported, which is mainly used for
processing Bleached Lac for use in colourless polishes and nitrocellulose lacquers.
Lac Dye: When Sticklac is crushed and washed with water, the water-soluble
Lac Dye is dissolved out in small quantity after several processes. This
Dye is purely natural and hence called Natural Lac Dye.
Shellac: Seedlac is processed into Shellac flakes by melting it. This
is done mechanically, as well as by hand process. When processed mechanically,
it is known as Machine Made Shellac and when by hand process, it is called
Hand Made Shellac. Machine Made Shellac is manufactured in large quantity,
compared to Hand Made Shellac.
Button Lac: When Seedlac is melted by hand process, it is also processed
into round Button form known as Buttonlac.
Bleached Lac: Lac is bleached by the use of Sodium Hypochlorite solution.
Bleached lac is manufactured for use in colourless polishes and nitrocellulose
lacquers.
Dewaxed and Decolourised Shellac: Lac after wax extraction is known
as Dewaxed Lac or Wax free Lac. It is derived by solvent process. Very high
grade of Shellac, which is Dewaxed & Decolourised Shellac, is obtained
by this method, by using activated carbon as the Decolourising Agents.
Properties of Shellac and other Lac products
Shellac is used in different industries for the following different properties:
- Shellac dissolves in a wide variety of Alkaline or rapidly drying alcohol
solvents, but is resistant to a number of other solvents, particularly hydrocarbons.
- Its films show excellent adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces, possessing
high gloss, hardness and strength.
- Shellac is powerful bonding material with low thermal conductivity
and a small coefficient of expansion. Its thermal plasticity of absorbing
large amounts of fillers is noteworthy.
- Its electrical properties include high dielectric strength, low dielectric
constant and characteristic freedom from tracking.
- It is resistant to the action of ultra-violet rays.
- Shellac is non-toxic.
Industrial Uses of Shellac and other Lac products
Some of the main applications in different industries:
